Golden Globes Nominations 2017 -- UPDATED W/ WINNERS

Hey, so I forgot about this blog again. BUT awards season is starting! So. As usual, the Golden Globes are first, and here are the nods! I'll probably do a separate post listing the winners so the updated post doesn't get lost. I'm excited! Although as usual, I may not get to watch the broadcast live. Damn lack of cable and no online viewing options for Canadians.

UPDATE: I did not get to watch the broadcast but bolded titles/people are winners, as usual! (And I decided to just update the post after all.)

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Moonlight
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester By the Sea
Hacksaw Ridge

BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

La La Land
20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
Sing Street

I just saw La La Land tonight, and I could barely speak as the end credits rolled. I was so moved and awed by this film; this is what dreams, and movies, are made of. This reminded me of why I love the movies. It had the nostalgic feel of those original movie musicals that were so loved, but had modern elements that worked seamlessly.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Isabelle Huppert - Elle
Amy Adams - Arrival
Jessica Chastain - Miss Sloane
Ruth Negga - Loving
Natalie Portman - Jackie

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Casey Affleck - Manchester By the Sea
Joel Edgerton - Loving
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortenson - Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington - Fences

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Emma Stone - La La Land
Annette Bening - 20th Century Women
Lily Collins - Rules Don't Apply
Hailee Steinfeld - The Edge of Seventeen
Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins

Emma. She is old Hollywood glamour and relatable girl in this. She's the whole package. During the song about her aunt jumping in the Seine, tears streamed down my face, simply because of the power in her voice and face. She moved me, more than I have been moved by a performance in a long time. I'm predicting Oscar, even if she is up against Meryl.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Colin Farrell - The Lobster
Hugh Grant - Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill - War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool

I'm in agreement. Gosling is an all-time favourite of mine, but in this, he was incredible. I hadn't heard him sing before that I remember, but he was excellent. And to find out that that is him playing the piano like an absolute boss was amazing. I adored him, as usual.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

Viola Davis - Fences
Naomie Harris - Moonlight
Nicole Kidman - Lion
Octavia Spencer - Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams - Manchester By the Sea

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

Aaron Taylor-Johnson - Nocturnal Animals
Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg - Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel - Lion

BEST DIRECTOR - MOTION PICTURE

Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Tom Ford - Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson - Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By the Sea

BEST SCREENPLAY - MOTION PICTURE

Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Tom Ford - Nocturnal Animals
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By the Sea
Taylor Sheridan - Hell or High Water

What entirely disappoints me about these two previous categories is the same faces, and the complete and utter lack of women. It isn't like women created nothing. (Example.) I don't fault Chazelle's wins in both categories; as expressed above, that film floored me. But I know there could have been more diversity. We're still working to be represented, and I don't think it's an unimportant consideration going into the new year.

"Faith" - Sing
"Gold" - Gold
"How Far I'll Go" - Moana

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - DRAMA

I'm a freely admitted royals addict, so of course I watched this. It was done respectfully and was fascinating, and absolutely incredibly acted. A deftly painted portrait.
