Hey, so I forgot about this blog again. BUT awards season is starting! So. As usual, the Golden Globes are first, and here are the nods! I'll probably do a separate post listing the winners so the updated post doesn't get lost. I'm excited! Although as usual, I may not get to watch the broadcast live. Damn lack of cable and no online viewing options for Canadians.

I just saw La La Land tonight, and I could barely speak as the end credits rolled. I was so moved and awed by this film; this is what dreams, and movies, are made of. This reminded me of why I love the movies. It had the nostalgic feel of those original movie musicals that were so loved, but had modern elements that worked seamlessly.

She moved me, more than I have been moved by a performance in a long time. I'm predicting Oscar, even if she is up against Meryl.

What entirely disappoints me about these two previous categories is the same faces, and the complete and utter lack of women. It isn't like women created nothing. (Example.) I don't fault Chazelle's wins in both categories; as expressed above, that film floored me. But I know there could have been more diversity. We're still working to be represented, and I don't think it's an unimportant consideration going into the new year.

The 72nd Golden Globes - Updated Winners
When it rains, it pours. SAG Awards nominations were announced yesterday, and today we have the Golden Globes. (The Globes are always super fun, and I can't wait to see the fun. They're always way more laid back than the Academy Awards.)
Again, since they air January 11, 2015, and I'm as yet unsure where I'll be, I won't guarantee any liveblogging. I will post again with the updated winners when the time comes, however. (I'm more likely to have access to a television for January 11, though!)
UPDATE: I do have access to a television! Watching live. As always, I update throughout the show, bolding the winning people as we go along. I'm also going to put my commentary underneath each specific category, with the commentary on Amy and Tina's antics at the top before the nominees.

This North Korea thing got out of hand. It's not funny, in any way, and is only going to make people in North Korea angry and offended. This is so beneath Tina and Amy. UPDATE: It got a tiny bit better with Margaret Cho talking about Orange Is the New Black, though. Still desperate and beneath them.
That was an EXCELLENT speech, ABOUT free speech. It definitely deserved a standing ovation.

THE CECIL B. DEMILLE AWARD
George Clooney
I love George Clooney a LOT. He is one of my favourite performers and one of my favourite people (well, people who I don't know). His work in humanitarian efforts is also something we shouldn't forget. Although, also, my mother was very, very disappointed that him on Facts of Life was not included in that tribute reel. But congratulations to Clooney - he is the epitome of class in Hollywood with this acceptance speech, too. The fact that he just thanked the talents we recently lost is also so important to me, and breaking my heart in the best way. And I KNEW he would mention what's happening, in Paris and around the world. He's incredible.
*On the Globes website, it does say Transparent under William H. Macy's name. However, seeing as he has never appeared in that show, the majority of people, and myself, are assuming it was a typo and meant to say Shameless. If I am incorrect, I will update this post with that information as soon as possible. UPDATE: I wasn't incorrect. It was for Shameless.
Again, I'm not seeing a lot of surprises. I am enjoying the love for Gone Girl, particularly Rosamund Pike. M'lady DESERVES it. Gillian Flynn also deserves it, and I'm excited to see the Best Director nod for David Fincher, although it wasn't a surprise. I am seeing a lot of nods for Grand Budapest, and though I wasn't a huge fan of the film, I can definitely see why, although again, nothing earth shattering. I'm still looking forward to the broadcast - because Tina and Amy are two badass, hilarious women. I can't wait to see what they come up with!
There were a TON of surprises here tonight, actually. Good surprises, most of them. I can't entirely predict the Oscar race anymore! The Academy Awards nominees are announced on Thursday, January 15, and you better believe I'll have that post up ASAP. I don't know if I'll be liveblogging - I may be going to an Oscars party - but I'll be updating that post too! Thanks for starting out this awards season with me on the right foot!
Again, since they air January 11, 2015, and I'm as yet unsure where I'll be, I won't guarantee any liveblogging. I will post again with the updated winners when the time comes, however. (I'm more likely to have access to a television for January 11, though!)

UPDATE: It got a tiny bit better with Margaret Cho talking about Orange Is the New Black, though. Still desperate and beneath them.
That was an EXCELLENT speech, ABOUT free speech. It definitely deserved a standing ovation.

Oh, Jeremy Renner losing his place - priceless. -- I haven't seen this yet either - though I was pretty irked to hear they were remaking it, as that's one of my favourite films of all time - but I've heard it's pretty different and pretty great. I'm kind of sad to see The Normal Heart get snubbed, but I also kind of figured it would be. Frances McDormand does NOT look impressed, though. But maybe she's tired.

THE CECIL B. DEMILLE AWARD
George Clooney
I love George Clooney a LOT. He is one of my favourite performers and one of my favourite people (well, people who I don't know). His work in humanitarian efforts is also something we shouldn't forget. Although, also, my mother was very, very disappointed that him on Facts of Life was not included in that tribute reel. But congratulations to Clooney - he is the epitome of class in Hollywood with this acceptance speech, too. The fact that he just thanked the talents we recently lost is also so important to me, and breaking my heart in the best way. And I KNEW he would mention what's happening, in Paris and around the world. He's incredible.
*On the Globes website, it does say Transparent under William H. Macy's name. However, seeing as he has never appeared in that show, the majority of people, and myself, are assuming it was a typo and meant to say Shameless. If I am incorrect, I will update this post with that information as soon as possible. UPDATE: I wasn't incorrect. It was for Shameless.
Again, I'm not seeing a lot of surprises. I am enjoying the love for Gone Girl, particularly Rosamund Pike. M'lady DESERVES it. Gillian Flynn also deserves it, and I'm excited to see the Best Director nod for David Fincher, although it wasn't a surprise. I am seeing a lot of nods for Grand Budapest, and though I wasn't a huge fan of the film, I can definitely see why, although again, nothing earth shattering. I'm still looking forward to the broadcast - because Tina and Amy are two badass, hilarious women. I can't wait to see what they come up with!
There were a TON of surprises here tonight, actually. Good surprises, most of them. I can't entirely predict the Oscar race anymore! The Academy Awards nominees are announced on Thursday, January 15, and you better believe I'll have that post up ASAP. I don't know if I'll be liveblogging - I may be going to an Oscars party - but I'll be updating that post too! Thanks for starting out this awards season with me on the right foot!

8:05pm Woody Allen is winning the Cecil B. DeMille award! "Award for tiniest man with the biggest glasses." Martin Scorsese won it a few years ago! And PRETTY GREAT George Clooney burn! ("He would rather float into space than spend another minute with a woman who's his age." PARAPHRASED.)
8:06pm Yes, shout out to Her. "Takes place in the not so distant future, which is good, since so does Joaquin Phoenix." Still beyond annoyed that Scarlett Johansson got no recognition for her role.
8:08pm Over 500 instances of swearing in Wolf of Wall Street, and I would have thought it was WAY more. And they carefully avoided any in-poor-taste jokes about 12 Years a Slave.
8:09pm Ladies, kick off your shoes, and men, try them on and see how terrible they are. Thank you, Amy Poehler. I wonder how long they're going to keep the weird Tom Hanks pronunciation going.

8:18pm Gotta love when Jacqueline Bisset swore. Don't be afraid to do that, although they were on top of their bleeping. She seemed extremely overwhelmed, but I will definitely have to see Dancing on the Edge to see where this win came from.
8:27pm Elisabeth Moss beats out Helen Mirren and Jessica Lange. This is amazing. This is a good indication for the rest of the award season!

9:23pm I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club but I have heard spectacular things about it, particularly about Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. They seem like iconic roles. I can't wait to see it, but I'm also happy to see Jared get some recognition. He is super talented.
9:30pm Emma Thompson is literally one of the most talented women out there right now. She can be hilarious and also beautifully intense. But I think people often forget how absolutely fall on the floor hilarious she can be, and I'm glad to see it in evidence with that whole shoe bit tonight. So wonderful. And Spike Jonze wins Best Screenplay for Her, and if you've seen it - you get it.
9:37pm I just saw Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together. They still look to be great friends. Which is obvious. I just really love their partnerships. They play so well off of each other, and they work and create amazing things together. I occasionally go through phases of not being able to get enough of them. It's always nice to see long lasting friendships, as well as long lasting marriages.
11pm And that marks the end of another Golden Globes broadcast! (And it shockingly ended on time.) I noticed a ton of outrage over the fact that 12 Years a Slave got so little recognition. The actual swearing I saw when Matthew McConaughey won for Best Actor was actually surprising. But I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club or 12 Years a Slave, so I can't pass real judgement on whether or not one of them should have won over the other. But this was...well, this was an experience. Nothing too crazy happened, a lot of people seemed pretty darn drunk, and it gives a relatively good indication of who is likely to win the Oscars. I will be taking some time off to do this whole liveblogging and livetweeting thing again on March 2nd, for sure, for the Academy Awards! See you then.

But I think people often forget how absolutely fall on the floor hilarious she can be, and I'm glad to see it in evidence with that whole shoe bit tonight. So wonderful. And Spike Jonze wins Best Screenplay for Her, and if you've seen it - you get it.
9:37pm I just saw Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together. They still look to be great friends. Which is obvious. I just really love their partnerships. They play so well off of each other, and they work and create amazing things together. I occasionally go through phases of not being able to get enough of them. It's always nice to see long lasting friendships, as well as long lasting marriages.
11pm And that marks the end of another Golden Globes broadcast! (And it shockingly ended on time.) I noticed a ton of outrage over the fact that 12 Years a Slave got so little recognition. The actual swearing I saw when Matthew McConaughey won for Best Actor was actually surprising. But I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club or 12 Years a Slave, so I can't pass real judgement on whether or not one of them should have won over the other. But this was...well, this was an experience. Nothing too crazy happened, a lot of people seemed pretty darn drunk, and it gives a relatively good indication of who is likely to win the Oscars. I will be taking some time off to do this whole liveblogging and livetweeting thing again on March 2nd, for sure, for the Academy Awards! See you then.

Whew! There's quite a different crop here than in previous years. I'm excited to see these awards! I'm also determined to actually see all the nominees - excluding the TV series, because there's no way I could catch up on all of those in time.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have cleaned up here - both are nominated in TWO categories. That's the first time I've ever seen this! It should be a banner year. Also, why was I not INFORMED that Helena Bonham Carter played Elizabeth Taylor in a movie?! That is now an absolute must see for me!
I still have a problem with the fact that the Globes categorize musicals and comedies in the same category - as we saw with Les Mis last year, it is not a comedy just because it's a musical, and it shouldn't be going up against comedies. Musicals either need their own category, or they need to be included where appropriate. Unfortunately, that's probably not going to change any time soon. So, we'll just have to see how everything goes.
As always, I'm a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, and I am rooting for Coop to win something this year after being snubbed for Silver Linings last year. I cannot wait to see American Hustle; it looks great and it's David O. Russell, who usually hits it out of the park for me.

One awards show down!
I think most of these, at least to me, were pretty obvious and I had called a few of them ages ago. (Like Brave, and Daniel Day-Lewis.) But there were a few surprises for me! Such as ARGO for Best Picture - I REALLY wasn't expecting that. Kudos to Ben and his team for that. (But remember to thank George next time you're on stage or Jennifer Garner is gonna have to do it for you! He's never going to live that down.)
Jennifer Lawrence was a nice surprise. I mean, I was DEFINITELY rooting for her, but the woman was up against Judi Dench, Meryl Streep and Maggie Smith. If she hadn't won, no one would have blamed her. But she DID, and I think that's a real testament to how important she's going to be to the world of Hollywood and films. I really admire her, and not just because of The Hunger Games. She is my Katniss, but she can also hold her own against greats like Robert De Niro. I haven't yet had a chance to see Winter's Bone but from what I've heard, she holds her own there too. I really love her, and I'm glad she's getting the recognition I personally believe she deserves. She's an extremely versatile actress, and she really gives it her all. (The fact that she's HILARIOUS and adorbs is a side point.)
Skyfall for best song was perfect. I haven't seen SKYFALL, and I have no desire to see it, as I don't like the James Bond movies or Daniel Craig as a general rule (except in THE JACKET; he was brilliant in that, mostly because not one person believed me when I said it was Daniel Craig.) YAY ADELE! She's amazing, and her speech was up there with Jessica Chastain's for the most genuine and awesome.
Let's just have some love time for Christoph Waltz. Love that man so much, and he's so brilliant, I'm glad he won! I wasn't sure about that category; Alan Arkin was a close second for me, and Robert De Niro getting no nomination was a big thing. But Christoph is awesome, love him! And yay for Tarantino getting Screenplay for Django - well deserved too!
Now. For the end of this, let's talk about how much I admire, respect, and adore Jodie Foster. I have always really liked Jodie; there has never been a time, as I've had with some other actors, where I didn't like them. (I really didn't like Leonardo DiCaprio for about 4 years after TITANIC came out. I think I hit my head really hard. Don't worry, I love him like crazy again.) I've always liked her, and I really hadn't seen her in very much, let alone any of her iconic roles. (I only saw SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in first year of university, 2008, and TAXI DRIVER last year, 2012.) But as I started paying attention to entertainment news and realising what she was doing, I followed her avidly. I still haven't seen most of her movies, because it's hard for me to find them (no downloading ever for the win!), but I always read any article about her I could find. She fascinated me, because she just didn't care what people thought of her, and she had been working for so, SO long. (Since she was THREE. That's a LONG time.) This speech only reinforced that. I had read her "defense" of Kristen Stewart - I didn't really find it a defense so much as a commentary on privacy. And her speech tonight was that as well; she didn't feel the need to tell people she was gay, because it's none of their business, and so she didn't really. She rambled a bit, mostly about privacy, but she did it well at the same time. She just said what she felt, and what mattered to her, and it worked. The bit about her mother also killed me; I teared up a LOT at that! It was beautiful, and it must be so hard for her to have to see her mother go through what she is going through, but it was just amazing that she said it didn't matter if her mom didn't understand; the important part was that she loved her. It was great, and it just made me realise, all over again, that this woman is strong, independent, and she does what matters to her. I can't wait to see other creations of hers, as well as eventually watching her entire filmography - as in, EVERYTHING. I love her. That's the point, obviously.
But it was a great awards show, with some surprises as well as obvious wins and events. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were great; I love those two. And the random Bill Clinton appearance was also awesome!
I'm loving that this awards season, I actually get to watch everything! SAG awards are up next, on Jan 27th, unless I figure out that another one is before that! (I think it's the next big one, anyway.) I'll be livetweeting and updating for that too.

One awards show down!
I think most of these, at least to me, were pretty obvious and I had called a few of them ages ago. (Like Brave, and Daniel Day-Lewis.) But there were a few surprises for me! Such as ARGO for Best Picture - I REALLY wasn't expecting that. Kudos to Ben and his team for that. (But remember to thank George next time you're on stage or Jennifer Garner is gonna have to do it for you! He's never going to live that down.)
Jennifer Lawrence was a nice surprise. I mean, I was DEFINITELY rooting for her, but the woman was up against Judi Dench, Meryl Streep and Maggie Smith. If she hadn't won, no one would have blamed her. But she DID, and I think that's a real testament to how important she's going to be to the world of Hollywood and films. I really admire her, and not just because of The Hunger Games. She is my Katniss, but she can also hold her own against greats like Robert De Niro. I haven't yet had a chance to see Winter's Bone but from what I've heard, she holds her own there too. I really love her, and I'm glad she's getting the recognition I personally believe she deserves. She's an extremely versatile actress, and she really gives it her all. (The fact that she's HILARIOUS and adorbs is a side point.)
Skyfall for best song was perfect. I haven't seen SKYFALL, and I have no desire to see it, as I don't like the James Bond movies or Daniel Craig as a general rule (except in THE JACKET; he was brilliant in that, mostly because not one person believed me when I said it was Daniel Craig.) YAY ADELE! She's amazing, and her speech was up there with Jessica Chastain's for the most genuine and awesome.
Let's just have some love time for Christoph Waltz. Love that man so much, and he's so brilliant, I'm glad he won! I wasn't sure about that category; Alan Arkin was a close second for me, and Robert De Niro getting no nomination was a big thing. But Christoph is awesome, love him! And yay for Tarantino getting Screenplay for Django - well deserved too!
Now. For the end of this, let's talk about how much I admire, respect, and adore Jodie Foster. I have always really liked Jodie; there has never been a time, as I've had with some other actors, where I didn't like them. (I really didn't like Leonardo DiCaprio for about 4 years after TITANIC came out. I think I hit my head really hard. Don't worry, I love him like crazy again.) I've always liked her, and I really hadn't seen her in very much, let alone any of her iconic roles. (I only saw SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in first year of university, 2008, and TAXI DRIVER last year, 2012.) But as I started paying attention to entertainment news and realising what she was doing, I followed her avidly. I still haven't seen most of her movies, because it's hard for me to find them (no downloading ever for the win!), but I always read any article about her I could find.
