Trying Something New - Canada Reads 2016

So, I usually limit these kinds of posts to the awards season. Where I talk about nominees and winners and the like. However, every year (at least for the past couple of years), I have followed Canada Reads. (It helped that last year, I was working at a bookstore that featured displays!) I kind of want to do some blog posts. And possibly READ all of the books! Canada Reads is one of my favourite ideas; it gets people reading and discussing. It's like a country wide book club, and often, the panelists are fascinating!

So here are the long listed books! We'll know tomorrow who the finalists are, as well as the panelists defending them. The show will be hosted by Wab Kinew again; I didn't mind him as a host last year, and he was a good replacement for the former host.

This year is all about transformation and second chances, stories of migrants/immigrants. Most of these books were already on my to-read list, and I'm hoping to read all fifteen long listed books. I might have to change that goal to just the five before Canada Reads actually starts, but still. I absolutely adored When Everything Feels Like the Movies by Raziel Reid from last year (I still wish it had won, and still contend that people were afraid of it), and it was nice to be able to watch Elaine Lui (aka Lainey Gossip) defend it so passionately. I'm hoping this year will be just as engaging! (There is a graphic novel on the list, which is really, really cool.)

Academy Awards - UPDATED WITH WINNERS

The biggest awards ceremony of the year is almost upon us. The nominations were announced this morning, and there have already been many, many discussions. (Somewhat overshadowed by the world learning of the death of Alan Rickman. My heart is broken.) Most of these discussions center around the fact that the nominations are...pretty white-centric. And they are. They always are. This needs to change, but we need to be changing the Academy roster to do this. They're working on it, but it's going to take a long time to roll over. People are invited every year (I usually post this list too), but it depends on those people. And politics are a huge factor that people like to either mock or pretend don't exist. Politics are the main way the Academy Awards happen at all.

However, this ceremony still fascinates me. I like to see what's obviously Oscar material. It's an interesting cultural view. A really good thing, though, is that Mad Max: Fury Road actually got a ton of nominations, and I have to say, I wasn't expecting it to see it in anything but the technical categories. Nice surprise, I'll take it!

Accio Books Tag

Yes. I am aware this is super old. But I've only recently had a chance to actually catch up on YouTube, and I just discovered Kristina Horner's Accio Books tag. While I don't make videos, and when I do, they take FOREVER, I thought, there's no reason I can't write a blog post! And I'm bored right now, so here we go. (Check out Kristina's video here!)

The Accio Books program is something run by the Harry Potter Alliance (one of my favourite organisations), and it is an annual book drive! "Since 2009, Harry Potter fans around the world have donated more than 100,000 books to underprivileged or underserved readers." (Check out this page for more information - it is mainly an American organisation, meaning I don't get to participate as fully due to limited access, but I absolutely adore the idea.)

1. What was your favourite book growing up?
Oof. What a question. And I'm going to cop out and list like ten million! My family is pretty much made up of voracious readers, so I have NEVER had a shortage of books. (And I am aware of  how lucky I am to have that childhood experience, and sharing that experience is part of the reason I love the Accio Books drive.) I think I read a lot of classics handed down from my mum - Anne of Green Gables (I reread this series every year, pretty much); Chronicles of Narnia; Nancy Drew (every time my grandparents went to a garage sale, I got a new Nancy Drew book!) - there were so many. Harry Potter also came out when I was seven years old, so I am totally counting that as part of my favourite books growing up. Also Babysitters Club, and I read a lot of Mercedes Lackey's books. I read above my age level, and one of the funniest/frustrating stories my mum tells me is that they would get notes sent home from school from teachers concerned about my reading material.

2. What's the best lesson you ever learned from a book?
I think it's gotta be Harry Potter themed for one lesson - love. That was a MASSIVE part of shaping  my life, because I started reading them so young. Love and perseverance, and learning what can come of those and what can't be fixed by them is so important. (And that your friends will get you through anything - Harry would have been nothin' without Ron and Hermione, especially Hermione.) I also learned that it's okay to show that you're smart! (That's from a lot of books.)
Otherwise, lessons I learned from Anne Shirley - that you can't have ridiculous levels of optimism because it's just not realistic and you'll crash - but you should try to strive for some optimism no matter what.

3. What would your dream library look like?
Realistically - a room with three and a half walls just bookcases. Just floor to ceiling bookcases, but three and a half walls because one wall would have a huge bay window with a super comfy window seat looking out onto a lake! And a super comfy chair in a corner with a lamp. And room in the middle so I could spread out on some pillows sometimes. I want to make that happen!
Fantasy - definitely gotta go with Beauty and the Beast library. That one's been in my head for my whole life!

4. If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
HM. I'm probably going to surprise no one and say Hermione. Even with all her trials and tribulations, she is just one of my favourite people ever.

5. What's your favourite fictional food?
Any time I read ANY story wherein ANYONE goes to a faerie court, I want everything in the feast except the meat. ALWAYS. (And I would be hard pressed to remember that if I eat it, I'm stuck in faerie forever.) Or you have to love raspberry cordial - although luckily, that's not actually fictional. That's just one of my favourite scenes. Also any of Marilla's preserves. I am going to have to make a trip to PEI.

6. What fictional book from Harry Potter would you most like to read?
I totally had an answer prepared, and then Kristina mentioned Lockhart's books - and YES! I want to read all of those! They would be fascinating and more than likely super pretentious and hilarious.
Other than that, I definitely want to read The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore by Rita Skeeter, and Hogwarts, a History. Come on, Jo Rowling!

7. What books are you donating to Accio Books and why?
Again, it's much harder to figure out where I can donate books in Canada, and I definitely don't have the resources to ship books - also, I'm behind the times here - but if I was able to, I would have a hard time choosing. And would probably end up replacing the copies of whatever I donated, because I would want to donate books that meant a lot to me and would be entertaining for others, and not books I felt lukewarm about.

Well, that passed about twenty minutes! Excellent. I love this initiative, and it was fun trying to answer these questions, and having to peruse my literature memories. (Especially because of the majority of my books are still in storage, two years after I moved.)

Shockingly, I was NOT spoiled for these awards! This is all brand new information. NOTE: I saw August: Osage County, and it was spectacular to me. Well deserved nominations for Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep. Also, can we talk about Benedict Cumberbatch MORE PLEASE?

LOVE that - "shining a light under the floorboards of this nation and showing what we stand on." A really affecting line from Lupita's speech. And a shoutout to Yale Drama."Do you know Brad Pitt, Daddy? I'm going to be in a movie with him." "I don't know him personally, but I'm glad you got a job." Amazing anecdote!

Well, at least Jeremy Renner got to BE THERE. STILL MAD ABOUT THE LACK OF RECOGNITION.

There has been a lot of controversy on my Twitter feed about American Hustle lately, but I am firmly in the 'I love it' camp.

I am really glad to see a newcomer getting such great recognition, especially for what seems to be kind of a scary role. It's important to recognise newcomers in their own right, and not just as newcomers, as many award shows seem to do. Barkhad Abdi FTW!

I had NO IDEA Jared Leto hadn't ever been nominated for a SAG before. Travesty, but I'm so glad that he did get to win. "Wonderful tribe of dreamers" - love that description of SAG-AFTRA!And thank you, Jared, for dedicating it to those who have been affected by this disease. This is so important; I believe it's way more important than thanking people who got the performer the job or the like; it almost makes people forget who the film would really impact, especially when it comes to iconic stories such as this. I need to see Dallas Buyers Club very soon.

Tina Fey's last nomination for 30 Rock! Kind of bittersweet. But well deserved.

Bahahaha adorable acceptance speech from Julia Louis-Dreyfus! Sometimes the comedy bits get tired, but this one stayed fresh and funny!

I love to watch those camera shots when the subjects have no idea they're being filmed. Dame Helen Mirren looked like she was about to fall asleep.

DID I JUST NOT KNOW THAT JOHN CUSACK IS IN THE BUTLER? (Also, why do we always have to call it Lee Daniels' The Butler? I understand he made it, but I've never really understood the practice of owning a film in that way.)

Fourth consecutive win for Modern Family ensemble! People truly love this show. I do enjoy it. Also, "we're going to make Sofia talk, because America loves her and her boobs." This is very true.

I'm a big fan of presidents' speeches, actually. Always interesting to see the people behind these organisations! Also, you gotta love the Dakota Fanning shout out. (I'M FOUR YEARS OLDER THAN DAKOTA FANNING, IN OTHER WORDS. MY LIFE IS NOTHING.)

I feel like Elisabeth Moss is actually adorable. She looks so happy for Helen - and that's such a great thing to see. And Helen just returned that - oh my goodness! She gave her a special round of applause, from herself. If I were Elisabeth, I would probably flip out.

EMMA THOMPSON FOR HOSTING ALL THE AWARD SHOWS EVER. Preferably including Ewan McGregor with that fantastic hair.

You gotta love EGOTs! There's only been eleven so far. I'm always rooting for people to get there; it's such an achievement. And Rita Moreno is well deserving! This woman. This. Woman. This actress. (And yes, I say actress. That's a WHOLE other blog post.) Getting to hear her sing on her feet is phenomenal as well. My mum also just said she's better than Diane Keaton. WELL, YEAH.

The In Memoriam section always makes me cry. But it's so important to have. Although it also makes me a little sad that sometimes people die, and you have no idea, because they didn't fit the definition of being famous anymore. It's weird to think of how the media explodes about certain deaths, but not others. It also makes you think about death and how people react to it. But I think In Memoriam segments are a great way of remembering and honouring those who have passed.

BAFTA Nominations

Awards season is running full tilt! Soon enough, I'll be posting winners - starting on Sunday, as the Golden Globes air. I want to try to liveblog that one, meaning I'll make a newer post with all the nominees, and indicate who won as the awards are announced, along with some commentary. It'll be continuously updated until the end of the broadcast. That's the plan, anyway!

Whew! There's quite a different crop here than in previous years. I'm excited to see these awards! I'm also determined to actually see all the nominees - excluding the TV series, because there's no way I could catch up on all of those in time.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have cleaned up here - both are nominated in TWO categories. That's the first time I've ever seen this! It should be a banner year. Also, why was I not INFORMED that Helena Bonham Carter played Elizabeth Taylor in a movie?! That is now an absolute must see for me!

I still have a problem with the fact that the Globes categorize musicals and comedies in the same category - as we saw with Les Mis last year, it is not a comedy just because it's a musical, and it shouldn't be going up against comedies. Musicals either need their own category, or they need to be included where appropriate. Unfortunately, that's probably not going to change any time soon. So, we'll just have to see how everything goes.

As always, I'm a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, and I am rooting for Coop to win something this year after being snubbed for Silver Linings last year. I cannot wait to see American Hustle; it looks great and it's David O. Russell, who usually hits it out of the park for me.

This should be fascinating. I am surprised, yet pleasantly so, by James Gandolfini's posthumous nomination. Not sure if that will be a deciding factor, but it's nice to see one of his last pieces being so well received. And as always, I love the inclusion of the stunt performances. Usually there are writing awards, but I haven't seen any mention of those nominations as of yet. I'll update this blog post if I get more information!
