I just decided to do a whole new post with the winners at the Oscars last night - mostly because I'm too lazy to deal with the weird formatting. (Although I'm sure it'll still make me angry - it likes to just do things by itself, no matter how many times I fix spacing!)
Needless to say, these Oscars were VERY memorable. I went to the viewing at a local cinema here - love that that's an option and that it's free! (Only costs a canned food donation. princesscinemas.com) That ending - oh, that ending. Live TV is both the best and the worst. I surprisingly didn't hate Jimmy Kimmel as a host - that running feud with Matt Damon shockingly never got old! (Although why everyone hates on We Bought a Zoo so hard is beyond me; I am a Cameron Crowe fangirl, after all.)
This season also brought out a different side of my Twitter feed; I had no idea people I followed absolutely detested La La Land. I thought it was beautifully done but of course, it doesn't compare to films of a different nature, such as Moonlight (yes, I agree that it rightfully won over La La Land). I did unfollow one account because of the absolute hatred they spewed about the film; it was overwhelming. And I don't usually unfollow for that reason, but there was no justification for it that I could find.

Brie Larson's complete lack of emotion, and her smile being wiped off her face when she announced, says it all. To give one of the highest acting honours to someone accused of many, many instances of sexual harassment, abuse and intimidation is disgusting. I don't even want to watch Manchester By the Sea, and I swore out loud when this person's name was announced. It's yet another instance of Hollywood pretending everything is fine and turning a blind eye, much the same as Johnny Depp. Denzel should have won, but Ryan was also incredible. Anyone but that choice.

YOU DIDN'T LET MY MAN EGOT BECAUSE OF THAT SONG? The only other song that would have softened the blow would have been "Audition" - "City of Stars" isn't that good. (Also why they didn't let Emma Stone perform "Audition" at least is beyond me; John Legend completely changed the tone. He's incredible, don't get me wrong, but Emma made me cry singing that song. All those people saying she can't sing are insane, also; she's unconventional, and it isn't exactly a trained Broadway voice, but she killed it.)

Academy Awards - UPDATED WITH WINNERS
The biggest awards ceremony of the year is almost upon us. The nominations were announced this morning, and there have already been many, many discussions. (Somewhat overshadowed by the world learning of the death of Alan Rickman. My heart is broken.) Most of these discussions center around the fact that the nominations are...pretty white-centric. And they are. They always are. This needs to change, but we need to be changing the Academy roster to do this. They're working on it, but it's going to take a long time to roll over. People are invited every year (I usually post this list too), but it depends on those people. And politics are a huge factor that people like to either mock or pretend don't exist. Politics are the main way the Academy Awards happen at all.
However, this ceremony still fascinates me. I like to see what's obviously Oscar material. It's an interesting cultural view. A really good thing, though, is that Mad Max: Fury Road actually got a ton of nominations, and I have to say, I wasn't expecting it to see it in anything but the technical categories. Nice surprise, I'll take it!

The 87th Annual Academy Award - Nominees
It's here, it's here! One of the biggest nights in the award show season - and I'm still excited, despite one of the most severe instances of lack of diversity that I've seen since I started watching the show. HOWEVER, not having seen all the films in question, I can't put forward concrete opinions. All I can do is offer my opinion based on the trends I'm seeing from the other shows. I will be liveblogging, this post will be updated with winners!

Well. I'm sad to see Gillian Flynn snubbed for Gone Girl, as well as David Fincher (though I seem to be somewhat alone in enjoying that film, from the amount of people I've talked to who HATED it). And apparently snubbing Ava DuVernay for Selma was a travesty, though I haven't yet had a chance to see Selma. And my timeline blew up when the nominations were announced with outrage over the lack of nominations for The LEGO Movie.
In the end, the nominations were generally what I expected, and I have some awards I'm expecting. (Julianne Moore and J.K. Simmons, for instance.)
I'm mostly really excited to see what Neil Patrick Harris has up his sleeve. Apparently he's got the writers of Frozen writing one of his musical numbers! (Thank goodness for his musical numbers.) Tomorrow's the big night, and I'm still excited!

Invitations to the Academy
Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites people to join the Academy. It's usually to fill vacancies that open when members pass on or retire. 8:31pm - Of course Ellen's not wearing a gown! People are crazy. And seven years ago was the last time she hosted? Wow. And love the "so different!" Everyone is nominated who was last time; perfection.
8:32pm - Only Ellen could pull off that Barkhad Abdi joke without being too offensive. AND the Liza Minnelli joke!
8:33pm - I always forget the Oscars get themes. Heroes in Hollywood is a good one, though.
8:34pm - Definitely laughing more this year than last! I'll always take Ellen over Seth MacFarlane.
8:35pm - Love the 'total of six years of college' - especially with people like Lupita Nyong'o in the room!
8:37pm - It is the Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence won last year. PERFECT. And gotta love that Ellen is pushing to bring her the Oscar - no more tripping! She only trips once, generally, so we should be good.
8:40pm - Oh Ellen! Killing it with the subtle penis jokes for Jonah Hill!
8:41pm - I obviously have a problem remembering the order of awards. I always forget Best Supporting Actor is given first!
8:43pm - YES! Jared Leto definitely, more than anyone, deserved this award. He broke my heart and lifted it at the same time. His performance in Dallas Buyers Club blew me away. This award was maybe predictable after he swept the awards all season long, but it doesn't mean that getting this highest honour doesn't mean anything.
8:47pm - Ahh Jim Carrey, not feeling shafted at all! Haha. I find Jim Carrey less and less funny as time goes on,though.
8:51pm - Oh, Ellen. Never gives up a moment to plug Finding Nemo. Who's excited for the second one? (Because Ellen's more excited than you are, I promise.)
8:47pm - Love Pharrell engaging with everyone in the front row! Meryl would, but Amy Adams was amazing. She was so into it! Love her so much.
8:59pm - I love Catherine Martin's design work, and I also love her. She's awesome. And Gatsby costumes were phenomenal! Love her work with Luhrmann. Also, things you learn: she's married to Baz Luhrmann. I used to know who everyone was married to!
9:20pm - I'm not sure I can handle the adorbs of JGL! Bowing to Emma Watson, looking like an excited little boy to open the envelope - the man is so amazing.
9:30pm - I was SO hoping Kate and Goldie would be presenting together. Oh well. I bet Jason Sudeikis is crossing fingers for HELIUM to win - he was nervous about pronunciation! OH IT WAS HELIUM!
9:42pm - Love the honourary Oscars! Steve Martin is so gracious. And Angela Lansbury - 'are you the living definition of range.' Well put, Geoffrey Rush. Well. Put. AND she would call an Oscar a golden chap.
9:43pm - Piero Tosi, yes!
9:44pm - Jean Herschel Award for Angelina Jolie is in no way surprising, but much as I don't like her as an actress, she does great work.
9:55pm - Fingers crossed for Benedict Cumberbatch to run around behind U2 onstage and do another epic photobomb.
10:04pm - I still think the Science & Tech awards should get WAY more recognition. These are the people who make things POSSIBLE!
10:35pm - No one can tell me P!nk can't sing. Not ever. Not a conventional belting voice, but she's still lovely to listen to.
10:36pm - Things I learn: I'm really bad at liveblogging and really good at livetweeting.
11:36pm - Really, Angelina Jolie? Maybe you don't cut off Sidney Poitier. Who cares what the teleprompter says or if he's slow? Shush!
There were really no upsets this year! That often makes for a fun but volatile time. I figured most of the people who won would win. But I also didn't have a problem with anyone who won, really. It mostly made me see that I need to see all of the films! When I'm not planning an event going up two days after the Oscars, I will see all of the nominated films. 8:31pm - Of course Ellen's not wearing a gown! People are crazy. And seven years ago was the last time she hosted? Wow. And love the "so different!" Everyone is nominated who was last time; perfection.
8:32pm - Only Ellen could pull off that Barkhad Abdi joke without being too offensive. AND the Liza Minnelli joke!
8:33pm - I always forget the Oscars get themes. Heroes in Hollywood is a good one, though.
8:34pm - Definitely laughing more this year than last! I'll always take Ellen over Seth MacFarlane.
8:35pm - Love the 'total of six years of college' - especially with people like Lupita Nyong'o in the room!
8:37pm - It is the Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence won last year. PERFECT. And gotta love that Ellen is pushing to bring her the Oscar - no more tripping! She only trips once, generally, so we should be good.
8:40pm - Oh Ellen! Killing it with the subtle penis jokes for Jonah Hill!
8:41pm - I obviously have a problem remembering the order of awards. I always forget Best Supporting Actor is given first!
8:43pm - YES! Jared Leto definitely, more than anyone, deserved this award. He broke my heart and lifted it at the same time. His performance in Dallas Buyers Club blew me away. This award was maybe predictable after he swept the awards all season long, but it doesn't mean that getting this highest honour doesn't mean anything.
8:47pm - Ahh Jim Carrey, not feeling shafted at all! Haha. I find Jim Carrey less and less funny as time goes on,though.
8:51pm - Oh, Ellen. Never gives up a moment to plug Finding Nemo. Who's excited for the second one? (Because Ellen's more excited than you are, I promise.)
8:47pm - Love Pharrell engaging with everyone in the front row! Meryl would, but Amy Adams was amazing. She was so into it! Love her so much.
8:59pm - I love Catherine Martin's design work, and I also love her. She's awesome. And Gatsby costumes were phenomenal! Love her work with Luhrmann. Also, things you learn: she's married to Baz Luhrmann. I used to know who everyone was married to!
9:20pm - I'm not sure I can handle the adorbs of JGL! Bowing to Emma Watson, looking like an excited little boy to open the envelope - the man is so amazing.
9:30pm - I was SO hoping Kate and Goldie would be presenting together. Oh well. I bet Jason Sudeikis is crossing fingers for HELIUM to win - he was nervous about pronunciation! OH IT WAS HELIUM!
9:42pm - Love the honourary Oscars! Steve Martin is so gracious. And Angela Lansbury - 'are you the living definition of range.' Well put, Geoffrey Rush. Well. Put. AND she would call an Oscar a golden chap.
9:43pm - Piero Tosi, yes!
9:44pm - Jean Herschel Award for Angelina Jolie is in no way surprising, but much as I don't like her as an actress, she does great work.
9:55pm - Fingers crossed for Benedict Cumberbatch to run around behind U2 onstage and do another epic photobomb.
10:04pm - I still think the Science & Tech awards should get WAY more recognition. These are the people who make things POSSIBLE!
10:35pm - No one can tell me P!nk can't sing. Not ever. Not a conventional belting voice, but she's still lovely to listen to.
10:36pm - Things I learn: I'm really bad at liveblogging and really good at livetweeting.
11:36pm - Really, Angelina Jolie? Maybe you don't cut off Sidney Poitier. Who cares what the teleprompter says or if he's slow? Shush!
There were really no upsets this year! That often makes for a fun but volatile time. I figured most of the people who won would win. But I also didn't have a problem with anyone who won, really. It mostly made me see that I need to see all of the films! When I'm not planning an event going up two days after the Oscars, I will see all of the nominated films. So there we have it. I'm excited about this year's Oscars, mostly due to the fact that for the first time in four years, I've got access to a television with satellite and am therefore able to watch the ceremony!
Every time the Oscars are on, I get a little excited once it's actually the day of the show. I love watching awards shows, since they're so multi-faceted for me. I love to look at the clothes, both the good and the...well, the interesting choices. (Sometimes I cannot understand what people were thinking when they put something on, but it doesn't necessarily mean that their choice is bad; it's just different. I don't call designers bad because I dislike what they put together.) I love the commentary, although I like some people's better than others. (Looking at you for the "other", Ben Mulroney and Ryan Seacrest...) I love the interviews, and since Jennifer Lawrence will be at this year's show (or at least, I hope she will be, although I'm assuming she will be, since she's nominated), I'm looking forward to that greatness; I love that girl. I wasn't home to watch the awards the last time she was at the ceremony. Anyway, I also love just the anticipation. I pay attention to each category; a lot of people only truly care about the big ticket categories: Best Picture, the acting, directing and writing. I take an interest in the others. The only ones I don't really care about, personally, would be the animated films, since I'm not a big fan of animated films as a general rule.
I always try to see the films in question, at the very least the ones up for Best Picture, although I always want to see the short films and the documentaries but they're harder to find. I don't think I've ever seen all of the films nominated, though; one day! It makes me feel more well rounded and more prepared going into the ceremony, or even just speculating on who or what will win what category. But at least from the films I have seen, I can kind of speculate. (It's always speculation, although generally it's pretty easy to tell which films will sweep or which actors/actresses will dominate, due to who generally wins. Mostly.) For instance, this year, I've seen Les Mis, Djagno Unchained, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, out of the Best Picture noms. Not a lot, unfortunately. I was glad to see that Jen Lawrence got a nod, as did Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. I thought they were all brilliant in Silver Linings, and I didn't know if Jennifer Lawrence would get a nod, despite everyone saying she would. I guess the masses were right! I had some predictions, and most of them came true (Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, for instance, as well as Wes Anderson for Moonrise Kingdom writing, Anna Karenina for costumes and production design, Les Mis for sound mixing), but because I haven't seen some of the movies, I wasn't sure what to expect in some areas.
Anyway. I'm rambling. So now y'all can see how invested I get in these awards! I'm not sure why; never have been sure why, probably never will be. I don't really care about the reason; I get interested, perhaps about the ways awards are distributed, perhaps how the Academy works, perhaps how most of the same people win awards every time they're nominated (Meryl Streep, anyone?), perhaps just about the hugeness of the ceremony. I'm not a big fan of the U.S. as a country sometimes, and I'm glad I don't live there, but they do have the majority of the world's films, and as someone who loves watching films and dissecting some of them, and learning the history of them, and the fact that some of my favourite actors and actresses have been American, I know they're the hub of something that I'm a big fan of, so it doesn't matter. (Not that all the movies I watch are American; I have a few Canadian movies, and I'm a huge fan of anything British.) But they do throw the biggest parties, in the form of awards shows, that I love watching, and they've given some great people to the world. (I'm reading a biography of Grace Kelly right now, so that may have something to do with that particular ramble, as well as the ramble trying to communicate the history and legacy of the Oscars, and how important they still are.)
ANYWAY ANYWAY. So Oscar nods are out! I've put some predictions there but I try not to do too many predictions in categories where I haven't seen the majority of the movies. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is Seth MacFarlane as host. I can't stand him on Family Guy, so we'll see how that goes.
Another post can be expected later tonight, as it is January 10th, but I'll get into that later, once I've had time to organise my feelings about it. This post was not a great consolidation of thoughts haha.

So there we have it. I'm excited about this year's Oscars, mostly due to the fact that for the first time in four years, I've got access to a television with satellite and am therefore able to watch the ceremony!
Every time the Oscars are on, I get a little excited once it's actually the day of the show. I love watching awards shows, since they're so multi-faceted for me. I love to look at the clothes, both the good and the...well, the interesting choices. (Sometimes I cannot understand what people were thinking when they put something on, but it doesn't necessarily mean that their choice is bad; it's just different. I don't call designers bad because I dislike what they put together.) I love the commentary, although I like some people's better than others. (Looking at you for the "other", Ben Mulroney and Ryan Seacrest...) I love the interviews, and since Jennifer Lawrence will be at this year's show (or at least, I hope she will be, although I'm assuming she will be, since she's nominated), I'm looking forward to that greatness; I love that girl.
