Invitations to Join the Academy

We're closer to the Oscars! This entire post is taken from oldfilmsflicker.tumblr.com. (Please check Marya Gates out - her website is cinema-fanatic.com. She is one of the smartest writers and I love her posts.)

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 176 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2012 to the Academy’s roster of members. ”These film professionals represent some of the most talented, most passionate contributors to our industry,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “I’m glad to recognize that by calling each of them a fellow Academy member.” Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003. The 2012 invitees are:

Directors' Guild Awards 2013

So The Directors' Guild of America Awards are being held tomorrow night. Apparently, they have been very accurate in predicting, in a way, the Oscar winners; since its inception in 1949, the DGA winner has won the corresponding Academy Award 58 out of 64 times. (The Wrap) I want to see how it goes this year, as a few of the directors nominated (Tom Hooper, Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, to name a few) were not nominated for the Academy Awards.

In the spirit of more awards season all the time, I thought I'd post the nominees and then update the post when they're announced! (I don't believe these are being televised, so once I get the list, I'll add this. The dinner, hosted by Kelsey Grammer, is being held February 2, 2013!) Winners will be highlighted in another colour.

UPDATING: So I'll be highlighting who won! It's interesting Ben Affleck took home the award; he's been winning across the board and the Academy may be kicking themselves a little bit right now.
